Personal Use Digital Scrapbook Freebie - February 2012

Six more weeks of winter - according to the groundhog on Thursday! I hope it won't be too miserable as I plan to spend March with my children and grandchildren in Michigan.

In the meantime, what a color palette we had to work with for the Paint the Barn Color Challenge at Moo Two Designs. Red, orange, brown, rose and goldenrod. The first thing that came to mind was 'sunset' . . . it helped that I just happened to have a photo in the right colors - complete with a pirate ship in silhouette!

To be honest, I was rather fearful of the boldness of the colors, wondering how to pull off a usable kit. Once everything started going onto the preview I was pleasantly surprised - I really hope you will enjoy this one.

Grandson Miles helps me clean the snow off my truck

January 6, Epiphany. Time to take down the first Christmas decorations I've put up, inside, for several years.

Being 'home' in Michigan for my first Christmas since 2003, it felt good to put a few up with my granddaughter, Annika's help. To keep it simple, I opted for a Charlie Brown tree and Nativity, which she and Miles had great fun playing with when they visited. Parking in their driveway for a few weeks was fun for all of us.

After our shifts went from 10 to 12-hour days at Amazon, I was totally exhausted.. Hoping I would eventually adjust to all the new muscles getting such a major workout, I truly expected to stay through January. We received an email saying we could leave prior to Dec 23rd, for those who were not extending to January. When that came, I replied that I would take them up on the offer. Even returning to 10-hour days after New Years, I needed a long-overdue breather, and said goodbye, explaining why, in great detail. Surprisingly, they listened to my comments and said there would be a major revision for this year.

In the meantime, I'm enjoying my Michigan visit, which comes to a close on Sunday, when I head to Florida for two months and catch up with friends and family there before returning to Michigan in March.

Somewhere along the line, I made the silly assumption that I would have more time to get things done, being back on my own again. Ummm. Nope. Not happening. There always seems to be something going on, whether it's filling propane or water tanks, working on greeting cards, creating Digital scrapbooking kits and layouts, or running off somewhere with my children and grandchildren.. No complaints. It's all good.

Becki and I went to see War Horse in Portage, when it opened on Christmas Day. The theater was sold out, but the show was well worth it. I would really like to see the Broadway performance some day. The movie was excellent.

Sarah, Becki and I spent a great afternoon in Shipshewana after Christmas, To Sarah's great delight, she found an end table match to the coffee/end table set her Dad and I bought when we were married in 1968! And, it was about the same price. She still uses the original pieces. The girls also found fabrics that match some of their scrapbooking papers. When I commented that they could really have fun with both, they looked at me and laughed - as last year I designed matching fabric and papers for my Christmas gifting calendar!

We've also had two great visits with my son and his family, in South Bend. I keep telling his oldest sons, Matt and Tim, that being taller than me now is totally against the rules. All they do is laugh at me with their new, deep voices. Weren't all my grands just born a couple of years ago???!!!! I don't feel any older, so why are they?

Well, I need to get off the computer and, reluctantly, put away my decorations. Stephen, Becki, Sarah and I are going out to a Middle-Eastern restaurant called Zooroona, in Kalamazoo tonight. For the past two years, they've met me at the airport when I flew up from Florida around Thanksgiving and we would go out to eat at Food Dance Cafe. Being here with my House on Wheels, we didn't have our dinner yet, so Sarah suggested we go out tonight. I saw their menu online. It will be hard to decide what to order. We may have to get four different things and sample each other's!

In the meantime, I wish each and every one, a brighter 2012. Last year did not bode so well for many of my friends - not just me!

What can I say. I just posted this month's Paint the Barn Color Challenge Digital Freebie kit, and Loobyloo at Moo Two Designs opted to create a tribute to her parents with it. Isn't it gorgeous? With St Valentine's Day around the corner, I did have a romantic theme in mind, and she nailed it. I love how she took the flowers and adjusted them to work with her LO, and the sprays and other embellishments all simply work together in a beautiful composition. Setting the second paper up a bit with shadowing simply makes everything 'pop'. Thank you so much for using my kit in such a wonderful way. I'm deeply honored.

Happy New Year, Everyone! I hope your Christmas and New Year were as terrific as mine. For the first time since 2003 I spent Christmas with my children and grandchildren in Indiana and Michigan. It's been wonderful. Right now, the House on Wheels is in my daughter's driveway, decorated in Mother Nature's own . . . SNOW! By Sunday I should be heading south for about two months. Then one more month up here before heading East for the Summer/Fall camping season.

Before hitting the road, I wanted to get my first Moo Two Designs Paint the Barn Color Challenge freebie digital kit posted for the New Year. There are some wonderful layouts posted already from other challenges, and Ayla was the first to post a mini kit for this challenge. How about that for a bonus! There will be more.

Enjoy, remember, these are my own creations, so they may be used for Personal Use Only - no commercial or sharing of any of my elements or papers. For you talented people who enjoy creating your own, but are looking for inspiration. Take a closer look at the triple ricrac trim and circle frame. I used strips from 3 of my papers in this kit, then created 3 strips of ric rac, using Creation Cassel's Basic Rick Rack script. After adding some depth and layering the 3 strips together, I took the triple trim, and used her Circular Script to create the base of the circle frame, before adding my own beading. Cassel not only has amazing scripts, reasonably priced, but also has two creative digital courses available - one is a not-so-basic digital scrapbook course, and the other has tutorials for creating personal elements and papers. December is going to be a crazy month for me. I'm working for Amazon.com during their peak season. The hours are insane, but I knew that coming in. At first we had 4 days on and three off - that was great as I was able to visit my Michigan family over Thanksgiving. That was the last of our three days off. Now we're into mandatory overtime, including the middle of those three days!

Join in the challenge and take a peak at our incredible December Collaboration in our store. If you're stumped for ideas, this one has an interesting twist. Each of us was asked to select a Christmas Song, and create our kit around that.

It's almost time to pull in my slides and head to my next position. I've had 3 great weeks with my children and grandchildren, marred only by a miserable virus that finally started to break up this morning. In the meantime, not knowing how good my internet connection will be at my next post, I've been trying to finish up my part of Moo Two Designs mega Christmas collab, and finally getting product ready to sell in their great store after years of turning down their request to do so. It is an honor, and I'm looking forward to be more active with the team. There will still be digi-scrap freebies here, but it's time.

Another busy month here. On Monday we close Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Birchwood Acres in New York's beautiful Catskills for the season and reopen on May 1, 2012. This season really flew. I plan to head to Michigan on Tuesday and still have a few things on my 'To-Do' list, but should be in good shape to head over.

Instead of getting things together this evening, I finished this mini kit for the October Paint the Barn Color Challenge at MooTwoDesigns. Hopefully, some of you are joining in the fun over on the farm. There have been a few changes in the challenges recently, keeping us on our toes with all the new twists! As usual, my kit is for Personal Use Only. When you download the elements and papers you like this month, please be sure to get a copy of my TOU. Not reading it, or honoring it does not give you the right to abuse my papers and elements, or any other designer's hard work. Things are getting busy at Moo Two Designs. Be sure to come join the fun this month at www.mootwodesigns.com/forum/.

Last week I said I had no idea what Week 3's challenge would be. Well, here it is. We have to create a hybrid item using the papers and elements we created in Week 1 and Week 2.
With no idea of what to do, I doodled a bit at work during a quiet moment on Monday and came up with this idea. I've always enjoyed creating 3D art from cards, but never tried one using my own designs.
I was pleased with the cut out card by itself, (top two samples), but do feel that layering the elements adds a bit more zing (bottom two examples).
This is for Personal Use Only and sure hope you have fun with it. Consider adding other ribbon and trim accents, or slitting the envelope to use as a money holder. Whatever you do, please show me. I enjoy seeing how creative everyone is with my items.

Our terrific moderator, SandE, of the Paint the Barn Color Challenge at Moo Two Designs, decided on a new twist for September. Each week we will have a new directive. Even though it's a bit early, today was a good day to work on challenges due to the imminent arrival of rains and winds, courtesy of Hurricane Irene.

This week we are being asked to create 4 papers. Here's what I came up with using SandE's color palette. Check back each week during September as I have no idea what goodies will be in store. Also, be sure to visit mootwodesigns.com/forum/ and join in the fun.

All East Coasters, stay safe. The worst should be over by Monday. Even though I'm 90 miles from New York City, and in the Catskills, we're still expecting some nasty weather. At least the flooding won't be a major issue for us, but the ground is soft, so there are other concerns.

Are you ready for some fun? Just click on the blog title and hop on over to the Moo Two Designs forum for the rules for the August 2011 Progressive Scrap Challenge and join us. The participation bonus and prize are wonderful additions to your Scrap stash.

This challenge started today, Saturday, August 13, 2011, and participants must have their first step posted by Monday, August 15 at midnight. Lots of time. Just be sure to read the rules. This month's challenge will comprise of 5 steps - fun times ahead!

Many of you are familiar with the progressive scrap process. I may be a veteran papers, element and kit designer, but layouts are a challenge for me. Template and Progressive challenges are wonderful exercises as they encourage us to move out of our comfort zones and learn something in the process (I'm all for that).

Last month really took me over my personal edge. I'm not one for lots of embellishments on my pages. I almost went into a near panic when Eileen threw them at us step-by-step. I was so sure that mine would end up wayyy too cluttered, especially when the steps became more themed. Imagine my surprise when I was named the winner!

You've heard me speak of an amazing layout creator, Nelleke, many times - and I love featuring her work. I mention her again for good reason (other than she is amazingly talented and inspirational in everything she does - read some of her amazing journaling on her layouts).

Nelleke is not a designer. Yet. (Once she steps into that venue she will blow our minds away with her potential creations.) She has to watch her pennies and cannot afford a good photo-editing/creative program that would allow her to really expand. Being a savvy woman, she uses kits, as most people do. Fortunately, Nelleke is a Creative Team member at both Moo Two Designs and other sites. What a bonus and a gem she is. There are times when I've created a kit, with NO idea of how it will be used, and that young lady literally makes it POP with excitement.

If you are new to digital scrapping, the progressive challenge is a great way to get your feet wet. Just joining Moo Two Designs is free, and with that membership comes a HUGE, gorgeous, collaboration Welcome Kit - with no strings attached, other than to be courteous and read every participating contributor's included TOU (Terms of Use). Many, like me, do not permit our work to be used commercially. Please respect that.

The Welcome Kit alone is a fantastic kit to use with the progressive scrap challenge. The only heads up - as we have NO idea what each step will be ahead of time, is to go through your photos to get an idea of the colors you might like to work with. Last month I made a goof on one step because I did not read the step direction properly. Fortunately, I was able to salvage it. Had I followed the steps properly, my LO would have been a bit different.

Is is just me, or is this summer really flying by? I can't complain. The Catskills are beautiful this summer and I'm getting lots of desperately needed hours. I'm a bit slow getting monthly kits and collaboration portions finished, but it's all good!

This month's Personal Use/Scrape4Hire freebie preview only shows 9 papers and 10 separate elements, but there are actually 17 elements in the folder.

This past month, several of our wonderful members at Moo Two Designs used my kits in their challenges, but I got behind in posting them here for you to admire. Colors for the June, 2011, Paint the barn Color Challenge at Moo Two Designs

These colors proved to be great fun to play about with this month. I hope you enjoy my contribution to this month's challenge at Moo Two Designs. I created all my own papers and embellishments, so my portion of the challenge is for personal use or scrap-4-hire. No Commercial Usage Permitted.

This month I played more with Creation Cassel's wonderful scripts, only available for PSP users. The fun knot is her knot script5; I turned a flower and star brad element I made into paper clips with that fun script. The frame around the Moo Two logo uses TWO of Cassel's scripts. After creating a companion trim for papers, I first used her folded ribbon script (I believe it's her #2 folded ribbon script), then used her circular script to see if the folded ribbon might work as a round frame - and it did!

One lovely aspect of Cassel's scripts is that you have the option of changing sizes and shadow dimensions. Most of her scripts work with your own trims, making customization even more unique.

Challenge Freebie for Moo Two Designs, March 2011

I'm a bit late this month, but for a definitely good reason. My daughter, Becki came down to visit me for 10 days. The weather was beautiful every day and we ended up getting her a new memory stick for her camera as she took so many photos. Can't wait to see them on Facebook soon!
Here's a little goodie for you for this month. I used Creation Cassel's great scripts for the folded ribbon, some frame sections, paper portions, directional tubes and twisted elastic. That lady creates some wonderful scripts that add 'zing' to designer papers and embellishments.
All the papers and embellies this month were inspired by two photographs I took that fit the color palette. As they are my original work, they are all for Personal Use Only. Cassel Creation's 'Confetti' Script

I simply had to share another gem with you - especially if, like me, you are a Paint Shop Pro user, vs Photoshop, which I cannot afford on a limited budget.

Most of you know I create kits for Moo Two Designs as well as here on my blog. Moo Two Designs administrators, Donna Whewe (sp) and Vanessa Fellowes, and, especially, Gloria Val Verde, have had a huge impact on my digital creation life. They have taught me how to truly tailor my craft over the years. Consequently, rather than have a store - which I do not have time for - I donate kits to the site which are added to their monthly collabs and help support Moo Two Designs.

That said, when Vanessa came on board as a new administrator, she suggested an amazing tool created by Cassel - a script, only available to PSP users - a Stray Pixel Finder. Well, that's become a HUGE lifeline for me when it comes to polishing my embellishments (I'm still in the tedious process of going through thousands of earlier embellishments and refining them.)

Cassel also creates amazing directional tubes, including gorgeous chains and even zippers that actually zip up and down (how cool is that?). The directional tubes intrigued me, wanting to create ribbons and ropes to accent my kits, but I could never align the sequences properly.

Last Sunday, Cassel had a chat room discussion on tubes. Keep in mind, that this lady has an amazing PSP-only store to which she adds items all the time. And STILL makes time to handle chats and even a school, with great patience and clarity. During the Tube chat, I asked about a script I saw. Her comment? 'We're here to talk about Tubes, not sell my store." Yup, you heard that right. Fortunately, she was quickly humbled when others, like me, wanted to know about her 'Directional' Script.

After the chat, I scooted off and purchased that amazing script, watching in awe as my artwork was 'magically' placed in the proper sequences for a smooth directional Tube.

What's all that got to do with the image above? (OK, the 'thread' is a directional tube, created by me - but before getting the new script, so it's rather clunky - I plan to remake it, properly, this time around!)

This blog is actually about the 'Bubbles'. Yup. I needed bubbles.

Terry (Withnuts), at Moo Two, hosts 2 challenges every month - one being 'Holiday Hoedown'. She finds some of the darndest subjects. This month one includes my very favorite pastime - 'Read in the Bathtub Day' - which is also a family joke with my daughter's family (read my granddaughter's quote - it's embarrassing, but true).

I needed a bathtub - preferably a claw foot with book and bubbles. Off I went to research clip art. The perfect item was there - for a license fee - and I'm a stickler for copyrights and TOUs (like you didn't know that!). No go.

Off to my own photos - found a great tub from Woodstock - filled with flowers. Removing the flowers wasn't going to happen, so I used the photo as a guide and made a new one, keeping the claw feet and flood filling the new image with the tub itself - sans flowers - for texture. The book came from an antique store in Micanopy and the bench from a visitor center in New York. The doily, string, candles and flowers are from my part of Moo Two Designs' gorgeous 'I Do' collab, and the rug is from a paper I made from my visit to Micanopy. BUT I STILL NEEDED BUBBLES!

Add one brain fart light bulb. Sometimes it takes awhile - Cassel's 'Confetti' script. Back to her store, download the script, create a single bubble in a PNG file, then run the script to create my bubble tube. It's really that simple. Cassel takes all the guesswork and hard part right out of the equation. Plus, I could add brightness and depth to each of the bubbles as well as bevel/shadows. What's not to like? I've GOT BUBBLES!!!!!

Look at this double treat!

I absolutely have to share this gem with all my followers and blog visitors. Nelleke used my mini freebie this month to feature her sisters original animal buddies which she calls 'Cuddles'. Aren't they adorable? I have no idea how long Tineke has been bringing these incredible creatures to life, but each is unique and whimsical.

This month, Nelleke has been featuring her sister's craft in several layouts at Moo Two Designs. There are no duplicate animals, so be sure to head over to the gallery and be prepared to be fascinated by Tineke's handwork, as well as Nelleke's stunning layouts. She makes all designers look amazing every time she uses our kits and collabs.

Nelleke, thank you so much for allowing me to feature your LO on my blog, and to your sister - who I hope has a blog or website for all the new fans she's sure to get as well!

I'm not trying to embarrass Nelleke here, but there's an important feature of digital scrapping and design that I would like to mention here, and a recent comment of hers in one of the Moo Two Design forums made me realize just how special and talented Nelleke truly is.

Obviously, I enjoy creating layouts, but can never leave well enough alone. It seems that in over 90% of them I find a need to create one more paper or embellishment to add - which I'm rather addicted to doing - but it IS time-consuming.

Unlike many of us, Nelleke is working with a digital scrapbook program, which gives her freedom to play with kits she downloads. Hooray! I'm not sure if Nelleke is a CT member or not, but she should be. (Talk to Tina if you aren't, Nelleke - she would LOVE to have you on board!) The CT (Creative Team) is a vital component of all digital scrapping groups. Simply being a designer, and showing the papers and elements in our kits does not sell a kit (free or otherwise) the way it can when used in a finished layout.

Virtually all designers create using a program such as Photoshop. I cannot afford that time-honored program so I use Microsoft Digital Image Suite, Corel Paint Shop Pro and Corel Painter (with a Wacom tablet) as the sources for all items I create. The only time I use a preset template is when I'm working with a challenge item such as Vanessa Fellows and Gloria Val Verde create. Even with photo book publishers such as Blurb, I'll take a blank page and make it wholly mine, so looking for a similar 'template' in their options does not exist.

Nelleke, and other layout creators are our virtual 'rocks'. They take our designs and turn them into mind-boggling layouts. Without them, we are nothing. Her program does not allow her the option of customizing colors. Many of us tweak them to fit the theme of our layouts. Nelleke's work is well thought out and composed. Thank you so very much.

Paint the Barn Color Challenge Mini Freebie for Moo Two Designs

This was a fun kit to create - I was determined to get it posted before heading off to bed - but never looked at the clock beforehand - oops! Being home alone these days means less clock watching - but I'll be mighty tired when I get up too!

I sure hope you enjoy this month's creations. Everything was created solely by myself, so again I ask you not to use any of these items as commercial use or Scrap-4-hire. Do not share any of the kit pieces directly with others, or add them to kits you are assembling - instead, send them here, to my blog, so they can download the files they want. And please, leave a little luv when you download anything I create, either here or in the gallery at Moo Two Designs.

We have new designers on board, so make sure to pop over to the Farm and check out the store, or come join in the challenges. This particular challenge always has several freebies each month. If you are not a designer, simply create a layout using the color palette, or download the freebies to create your own LO. If you're thinking of getting into digital design, it's a great place to start. Several of our regular designers also add to the challenge.

Update on Michael. He had a setback almost two weeks ago. I spent the Sunday in Clearwater with my brother and SIL, getting to the rehab facility about 9 pm. He said he wasn't feeling well - his chest was hurting and thought he was getting a cold. I asked the nurse to watch him closely. She was in a frazzle, but said she would and would let the night shift know - not. Monday morning I got a call that he was on his way to ER. When Mike's son went to New Horizon to ask what happened, he was told that the night nurse never entered Mike's symptoms.

He was released on Thursday - but is now at Oakhurst Rehab, in Ocala. Even though he had several 'firsts' in the hospital, his edema started to backfire, and he now has gout - in his feet and one knee - which means his desire to walk again has taken several steps backwards. He's a bit down, as he was finally able to stand up with help, but we'll take each day a step at a time. He's pleased with the new facility - other than the food, which he says. 'sucks'. But the nursing staff and CNAs are excellent and watch him closely. It's still going to be a l-o-n-g recovery. Please keep him in your prayers. Thank you so much.

Happy New Year Everyone!

After a rough end to last year and a bout with a nasty upper respiratory infection ringing in 2011, hopefully the worst is now behind and I can start focusing on happier things.

My travel companion, Mike, is in rehab after a gruelling month in the hospital. It's still a rough road for him, he's forgotten so much and is still confused on many issues, but he's happy where he is now and each day seems a bit brighter.

Here's my first mini freebie of the year for you. Don't forget to take some time visiting Moo Two Designs - both the store and forum. There are some great layouts in the gallery already, and one more freebie kit in the challenge - with more to come.

I am asking for prayers this month for my travel companion, Mike. What he thought was his asthma acting up before we left Virginia in November, actually proved to be Congestive Heart Failure. He has been in the hospital for 10 days already - 8 in ICU where he remains today. It's going to be a long, slow recovery that will ultimately change much of the way we live. Thank you

New Layouts Using my kits on Moo Two Designs

I am so excited this month. Generally my Paint the Barn Mini Kit free digital scrapbook kit at Moo Two Designsis not completed much before mid-month. Being November already, I'm sure many of our designers are anxiously working on their own Holiday gifting as well as scurrying to complete their portions of some of our great monthly collabs, Consequently, mine was the first to be uploaded to the server and apparently it's proving to be quite a hit by the number of downloads.

In the Paint the Barn Color Challenge, we are given a color palette at the beginning of the month. The great thing with this challenge is the number of options. 1, create a free mini-kit using the colors. 2, create a layout , using the colors from any kit. Or, 3, create a layout using the mini kits created for the month's challenge.

Imagine my surprise when two of our new members immediately chose to use mine.

Nancy C created Rain Kissed Rose, using a photo of a rose which she took. Isn't it gorgeous?

Nelleke, from the Netherlands (who reports that it's quite chilly there right now), also featured her photograph of a huge sunflower, which has obviously been making some small birds rather happy by the absence of many of its seeds.

Nelleke also honored me by using my part of the HUGE, 2009 Welcome Kit we give our new members, in a layout created for the Shack Out Back/Scripture Quote Challenge.
She found the amazing photo of the salt sculpture on a site in Poland.

There has been interest in some leaves I created for one of my layouts at Moo Two Designs this month. As the colors fall into the October color palette for the Paint the barn Color Challenge, it seemed a good time to add a couple of items to the kit. Some of you have already found the trims, which I hope you're enjoying. Those items are all at 300 dpi, png. The background photo paper is at 300 dpi, jpeg, and the frame is already in the basic kit.

Time for a new Freebie

October is well under way, but with so much going on, I'm working a bit slowly on getting layouts and kits going. We just came back to Natural Bridge after a great few days at Harper's Ferry, enjoying a CrossRoads RV rally. If you get a chance to visit that amazing area, be sure to do so.

We're also on our wind-down at the Jellystone Park at Natural Bridge. Every weekend this month is Halloween, with site decorating contests, costume prizes, park-wide, SAFE, trick-or-treating, and haunted wagon rides. On Saturday evening I get to be one of the site decoration judges - that should be great fun. We still have tent sites available, but only a few RV sites for units 24 feet long or less - and the cabins are sold out. The greater majority are booked a year in advance.

The Fall colors aren't what we were hoping for - it's been too dry, so the leaves are falling before they have a chance to really turn. After two incredible years of color in New York's Catskills, I guess I should realize that the colors are cyclic.

This has been one of those 'mini-kits' that is still getting a bit carried away . . . and not-so-mini. You may want to return through the month as there will be more items added.

It's not unusual for scrapbook kit designers to end up with quite a surplus of papers. This time I decided to put an additional paper packet together to share with you. I also added one more trim piece and the paper curl. The curl is compatible with all my papers. Simply place it on the top of the paper you want to curl, flip it in the direction you want, and cut away the the corner behind it. Simple!

We're in Natural Bridge, Virginia for the summer at another Jellystone Park. I can't wait to get to the bridge itself - but already taken over 600 photos of the beautiful scenery. Our trip up included stops in St Augustine, Florida and Charleston, South Carolina. What an amazing city - I was sure I was going to run out of room on an 8mg memory card - and did have to release a few of my RAW files as I was unable to locate my illusive 16 mg card. (I have two more on order.)

Other than blowing a tire on the way here Mother's Day morning, our trip was thoroughly enjoyable. This park is amazing - great fun for all ages. Maurice and Margie have owned it for 9 years and are continually improving it - adding a jumping pillow and 4 new cabins this year alone.

I start work in the morning -busy answering phones and taking reservations as I did the past two years in New York.

I hope you enjoy this kit. It's smaller than most of mine, but I felt that it had all the necessary ingredients for a good LO and hope you agree.

April/May Collab Freebie (Click here)

It's that time of the year again. Tomorrow we start out for Virginia where we plan to work at another Jellystone Park at natural Bridge this summer. We don't plan to get there before the 10th or so, but are looking forward to a leisurely ride with our House on Wheels with possible stops in St Augustine, Savannah and perhaps Charleston.

Weather may have some say in the matter on our leaving tomorrow as there's a healthy storm band heading east along the top end of Florida, but we'll check the weather forecast before we pull out.

We've had a little unexpected excitement this week. First, our mail from our mail service was mis-routed by the Ocala Post Office. Admittedly, we DID have the wrong zip code, but the street address was correct. All the same, the main post office apparently sent it back to our mail service - only they never received it.

While at the post office on Wednesday, I noticed a rather nasty spot under our truck - sure enough, we had not one, but THREE gas leaks from bad hoses. Fortunately, we found a great diesel mechanic down here who was able to get our truck road-worthy by 4 this afternoon - yeah!

Mike's son stopped by this morning and the two drove back to the post office, after a call from our mail service announced that our mail had still not been returned. Well, whaddaya know . . . it was sent BACK to the main Ocala Post Office (which was also not the zip on the package) . . .and was about 10 minutes away from going BACK to the distribution center.

So, after all that frustration, we have our mail and we have our truck and we're ready to go.

April/May Paint the Barn Color Challenge freebie for Moo Two Designs

Phew! Moo Two Designs' monthly challenges run from the 14th to the 14th. We have 8 challenges each month, with the Paint the Barn Color Challenge having two possibilities. Create a mini kit using the mod's pre-chosen color palette, or create LOs from the mini kits we create. As I love to create, this challenge is generally the first one I do. It does take time - and I'm terrible with the word 'mini' . . . tending to get carried away.

Throughout the month, other group members will also be adding mini kits and by the end, there is a wonderful, large freebie as well as a great posting bonus. Jen is our new moderator for this challenge and I wish her well. All the moderators are great at M2D.

This month I also added a full-size kit to the May Mega. That won't be posted here until after it's posted on Moo Two Designs, in fairness to them.

I do want to give a couple of kudos this month. One is to MediaFire and the other to Verizon's new Mifi.

Originally I used 4Shared to host my images. After several issues arose, I canceled my membership and removed all my freebies. It took awhile to find MediaFire, but what a treat. Often, 4Shared caused me grief during uploads due to limited sizes in uploads - even after I started paying for it. To their credit, they did try to resolve my issues, to no avail, and were prompt in crediting me.

Before starting today's blog, I uploaded 27 files to the new folder - the papers alone were 54 MB - everything was uploaded in one swoop, in less than half an hour (probably less, but I was doing something else at the time so not watching it close), It is so nice to be able to offer you individual papers and embellies where you not only can download just what you want, but also don't have to keep them on your HD - I have a large enough account, that I can keep the folders on MediaFire for easy access at any time. Thank you, MediaFire. You're terrific.

When I returned from a 2-week trip to Michigan, Mike told me about Verizon's new 'air card' - called Mifi. Wow! With the old connection, only one of us could go online at a time. It wasn't a major issue, but at times a bit annoying, having to wait for something to finish uploading or downloading before the other could use it.

With the Mifi, not only do we have a secure connection (finally), but up to 5 computers can be logged on at the same time with a password. Not only is it faster than the former, but the monthly rate is the same. For those of you who travel as we do, and always in different provider areas, this is a great solution.

A very happy Easter and Passover to everyone. For the first time in several years I am enjoying this season with my children and grandchildren in Michigan. The weather has been beautiful, making the visit even more special. Today's layout comes from my 'Ides of March' kit. There are 83 papers and embellies in it. It is a freebie, available as the forum moderator opens the Treasure Hunt challenge links in the Moo Two Designs, Fun on the Farm forum from March 15 - April 15.

If you're looking for affordable air fare, click on Direct Air and see if they serve any airports close to you. My daughter clued me in to their service when they opened a non-stop route between Punta Gorda (Ft Myers), Florida and Kalamazoo, Michigan at the end of 2008. They service smaller airports which actually makes flying much nicer and less frustrating. This year I'm staying in Ocala for another month, so their flight to Kalamazoo from Sanford (Orlando area) was closer. I was amazed by the size of the airport and for a nominal fee upgraded to a first class ticket with lots of lovely legroom and a cushier seat. They are a great company to work with.

My travel companion, Mike, called this morning to say he was locked out of both the fifth wheel and truck after leaving his keys in the latter. I didn't bring my set to Michigan, having no need of them here. He told me that we could have unlocked the door via my remote and our cell phones had I brought them. Wellll, I relayed the info to my SIL, who promptly checked with Snopes which says that's a fallacy - the waves will not transmit properly from car remote through a cell phone - too bad!

My daughter's on her way home from work, so it's time to get ready to head for my son's in South Bend. Have a wonderful day.

'Spring Sparkle' is the theme for the March/April Paint the Barn Color Challenge at Moo Two Designs. This is my part of this fun monthly challenge and there are more posted already in the gallery at Moo Two Designs, so come on over, join us and add your own designs or add to your personal kit libraries. I use Media Fire as it gives you the opportunity to explore and use what you need without overloading your own hard drives, and the previews of each item are large and clear.

It's been a busy start to 2010. After a too-lengthy virus that resulted in pneumonia, it was time to get to work. Fortunately I was able to enjoy quite a creative streak while I was down, and have finally been able to get out now that Florida's cold spell finally snapped.

With a new DSLR camera to learn, a craft show to prepare for, plus two mega digital kits to create and work on, the new month of challenges was suddenly up and running at Moo Two Designs. This is my part for the Jan/Feb Paint the Barn Color Challenge. There are some beautiful additions posted already, so head over there and join the fun to get these beautiful freebies - and perhaps create a layout using them - or add to the challenge with your own creations.

A New Look for a New Year - Welcome 2010

It's almost 2010, a good time for a wee bit of 'housekeeping'. It's been awhile since I did anything with this blog, so I spent today revamping, tweaking and creating a new look. It turned out a bit more bold than originally planned, but the colors appealed to me - using the base papers and elements from my recent freebie share here to see how it would evolve.

This look is my most aggressive - but like my layouts, the end result never ceases to be a surprise.

Just popping in from a busy day to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and a beautiful New Year. it's been another busy year, ending up with a nasty virus that really knocked me out of commission for several weeks. Definitely not the way to head into the Christmas Season. The worst appears to be over - I even attended a Christmas Eve party last night.

Hopefully all of you will be enjoying special time with family and loved ones. To those of you in the midst of the winter crises up north, I wish you peace through the storm.

We're back in Homosassa. For now we even have an incredible internet connection - which was not the case last year when uploading anything meant going over to the beautiful library a few miles away.

We've been enjoying the New Orleans area for a week - and will definitely have to return - so much to see and do around here. In the morning we will close up the slides, unhook the electricity and head over to Florida. Our original intention was to spend a few days near Pensacola - but our plans were smashed when we discovered that the park we are headed for is closed due to Hurricane Ida damage - bummer.

Good thing our plans are always chiseled in Jell-o!!!!!

For now, we may not have an internet connection again before we reach Homosassa, where we plan to winter again. With that in mind, I'm posting my part in the new Vintage Fall Mega Kit collab at Moo Two Designs. There are some awesome add-ons going out for challenge winners.

Please remember - all the items in my portion are my own images and artwork. NEVER add them to kits you create, and ALWAYS credit me when you use any of my work - please remember that I thoroughly enjoy seeing what you do with them. This week we're near New Orleans

Hello from Louisiana . . . this week. We're still making our way towards Florida, but had the luxury of taking our time returning this year, so we are. Ida threatened to dampen our visit . . . but only momentarily. Being an old sailor, Michael is very good at reading hurricanes. Sure enough, three days before the weathermen said anything, Mike determined that we would be safe at Fontainebleau State park, on the north side of lake Pontchartrain. We did experience some winds and high waters fairly close to us - but went through much heavier winds in Elkhart, Indiana two weeks ago!.

We were in New Orleans right after Hurricane Katrina, to help out at Belle Chasse Naval Air Station. The whole city was under quarantine though, so we never saw anything and had to evacuate right before Hurricane Rita arrived. During my RV transporting years I never had a chance to come over here, so this has been great fun - but my legs are sure getting sore from all the walking and I go through ALL my camera batteries every day!

Two days ago we went to the River Walk and French Quarter. What fun. I was enjoying the freighters, ferries and a cruise ship on the river front so much that we almost passed on the French Quarter. Fortunately we took a quick run through - but are heading back this afternoon for evening images - wheee!

The layout above reflects my first impression of that enchanting area - I created the papers and embellishments - including the beads - to accent my altered image - I'll post the frame and beads at another time as my days are happily hectic with touring the area right now - and I know I'll never see all that I want to on this visit.

The bead colors were selected by Rex himself during Mardi Gras in 1872. The three colors represent - purple - justice, green - faith and gold - power.

Gotta go - batteries are recharged - have cameras, must travel . . . bye for now!

Branson, Missouri

We are slowly meandering our way back to Florida for the winter after leaving the Catskills on October 14. Two of those weeks were in Elkhart, Indiana where I spent overdue time with my Mom, children and grandchildren. Unfortunately, my youngest two came down with mild cases of 'flu while we were there. Annika definitely had Swine Flu and Miles suffered an uncomfortable 24-hour more typical strain. My son Stephen's family was also stricken over a period of several weeks shortly before we arrived.

I'll catch up with that visit in another blog post and layout.

As full-time RVers, our motto is definitely Our Plans are Chiseled in Jell-O. Yup - gotta create a LO with that too. This trip has already taken two detours!

Our original intention was to head towards the Grand Canyon. The way winter seems to be arriving we opted to put that on the back burner, so Michael said, "How about Nashville?". Sounded good to me too.

Dear friends, AL and Becky Larson are temporarily living in Branson, Missouri. They've temporarily relocated there as they lost their own house on wheels - a motorhome - when their engine blew up on their way to Texas for the winter. With more time to play, we shifted our plans to include Branson, where neither of us has been to before.

Branson proved to be full of pleasant surprises. We live simply, so don't require anything 'high-maintenance'. Branson can be anything one chooses, and everyone can leave happy, either broke from all the expensive shows or with money still in pocket by exploring Branson in a different way.

One huge bonus to the area is NO parking meters. Now, some spaces are limited to 2 hours, and the patrol cars do scrutinize for violators. Fortunately, there is free, unlimited parking in many areas.

Long before reaching the town, signs pop up offering HUGE discounts. Well, now, that part is true - until you find the catch. If you want to do the shows, consider the tours - they are a great value. The legitimate discounts come in the visitor brochure - but are minimal . To get the huge discounts, prepare to give up 3 - 5 hours of your day to listen to the high-pitch spiel to purchase a time share. No thank you.

Like us, the Larson's also enjoy a richer, less hectic life. If you want to enjoy truly free shows in Branson, head to the Branson Mall . . . right by Wal-Mart. From 9 am - 9pm, one can relax and enjoy a variety of great talent. The plus side is that many of the artists also perform in the large shows. Others perform on weekends and play to the laid back visitors at the mall during the week.

A second not-quite-free venue is Mel's Hard Luck Diner, where all employees must audition before being hired on. The food is good, and prices are reasonable. The 4 of us ate for about $40, and we had live entertainment throughout our meal. Our waiter was Jason Seger - one of the finalists from season 7 of American Idol. What an amazing voice. Again, many of Mel's employees also perform in the high-priced shows.

Using our Passport America discount, we stayed at Stagecoach RV park for $72 - full hook up, paved site and patio, great WiFi, in the shadow of Table Rock and the beautiful reservoir known as Table Rock Lake. We would definitely return again.

One evening Al and Becky took up to Old Town to enjoy the water and fire light show. Spectacular. Different shows play every hour until 9pm. They had been to the day shows before, but admitted that the night sky, complemented by a full moon, was something else.

During the day we explored the area. Gorgeous State Parks and Army Corps of engineering parks and campgrounds are everywhere. As we were there between the two 'high seasons', with Christmas festivities already starting, the crowds weren't horrendous. The Larsen's also took us to some of their favorite overlooks. It was such a fun visit.

The only down side was the Larson's financial situation. They went to Branson after losing their motorhome as apartments are affordable, and work is generally plentiful - or was, until the recent economic down swing. They have looked everywhere in vain. It's not enough that they went' through their savings already, but their identity was also stolen, and they had to close their bank account after finding out that there was only $300 after a $2,500 theft that slipped through.

Becky filled me in on the grim news after Mike and Al took off for a walk around the campground. Fortunately, I was able to put some money away last summer, so I gave her a check to help them get by. They were gracious enough to accept it. The following morning they took it to a new bank, explaining their situation. They now have Identity Protection, and by opening a saving s and checking account by splitting the deposit, received a $50 bonus for each account. Their mental status had been so low, that neither had been able to eat for two weeks. We took them out to eat after they opened their new accounts, and the eased emotional pressure was so immediate that they had to slow down as they were both suddenly ravenous. It was heartbreaking to see, as they are two of the most hard-working, loving people I know. Not even their children have offered to help them out at this time.

Before leaving on Friday, Al let me know that the check had cleared - they were off to buy some groceries and catch up on bills. Please keep this deserving couple in your prayers.

Summer's over for us in the Catskills and the Jellystone Bears are safely hibernating until next spring.

I'm in Elkhart, Indiana visiting my wonderful children and grandchildren. As an extra bonus, Elkhart Campground - my old home from my RV transporting days, now has great cell phone coverage and even better WiFi. What a treat it was to upload this kit to MediaFire in almost no time, rather than the HOURS it took in the Catskills!

This is my portion of this month's Moo Two Designs, paint the Barn Color Challenge. So far, two more designers have added their parts to this month's color palette - and they're gorgeous.

I Was Looking Back to See . . .

It's hard to believe that we only have one more week to work this summer before we pull in the slides, hook up our 'House on Wheels' and take off on our next adventure. It's been a fast summer.

When we arrived the leaves were still tight on many trees - many only showing their winter skeletons. Now, the Fall colors are popping out like crazy. I thought we would not see last summer's glorious colors again, but I happily spoke too soon. In spite of all the rain and winds, the 'Fall Color Show' will not disappoint.

Dorothy Zalkin, who came here with her husband half a century ago, kept assuring me, that this area rarely fails to be beautiful. While waiting to clean lodges yesterday, I recalled that last year was the same - our final week was hectic - in the office by day, and out with the camera before and after. Now I can't even drive to a store anywhere without stopping along the roadside and adding volumes of new imagery to my external hard drive when I return. Love it, love it, love it.

Obviously, all the great color has the creative juices flowing. The two inner leaf frames above were created from some of the Fall leaves I snapped lying on the ground. The outer frame leaf is a tube I created from yet another leaf. The background paper, behind the image, emerged from a strip of that full photo which I played about with, eventually evolving into the triangles pattern. The inner corner trim evolved from using PSP's kaleidoscopic feature.

I will share the leaf frames - or the trims to make your own, upon request. But for now, it's time to punch the time clock.

On a recent visit to Newburgh, New York, to have work done on our pickup truck, I noticed a bridge down the road and grabbed my camera. Off in my own world, grabbing images of the water and train tracks below, leaves turning, flowers and bark, I was surprised when an elderly gentleman came alongside me and asked what I was taking pictures of.

Being me, I was doing what I love to do, savoring textures and color and recording them. I told him I enjoyed looking at the intricacy of veining in leaves and the amazing texture in the bark, as well as the vivid flower blossoms.

Totally dumbfounded, he rather haughtily informed me that HE only took pictures of 'pretty' things, and discarded the rest. Then, out of the blue, he asked me if I was a Christian. I told him that I was indeed, and one of the wonderful gifts I've been given is to look beyond the 'obvious' outward visual, and see within. At that, he shook his head, bid me good day and walked away.

While creating this layout to give you an idea of how I use my images to create papers and embellishments, that gentleman came to mind. As digital scrappers, we are truly a blessed group. Whether we create our own images and elements, or use those created by others, we all combine them into fresh thoughts and ideas that are unique to each of us.

How often do you 'disappear' into yourself when creating a layout? You have an idea in mind, then when it's complete it looks NOTHING like your original idea, and often surprises and delights you? That also happens to me when creating papers and elements. I never have any idea of what I'll end up with. All I do know is that I say a quiet Thank You for being given this opportunity to create and share.

For the heck of it - let's start a trend - where do YOUR inspirations for your LO s emerge from?

The three unretouched images in the frames above were the source for the papers and embellishments. The leaf spray has evolved into the frame, buttons, string, brad, 2 papers and bottom copy fill. The gorgeous bark has become papers and top copy fill. The vivid blossom is reflected in the background paper, side border, 2 more papers, and flower on the lower right.

I will post the link to these papers and embellies once they are uploaded.

Before I start, I want to give a special 'Thank You' to Gloria Val Verde at Moo Two Designs. That lady is truly amazing. She's a wife, mom and grandma who has had a hectic year both in her work and home life, including planning weddings and enough home-life trauma to fill themes for several soap operas! Somewhere in that crazy schedule she creates wonderful digital scrap elements, templates and layouts for Moo Two Designs (where she also has a really great shop).

Why is this so important? Simple. Were it not for her incredible generosity, this add-on kit would have never made it to Moo Two Designs this summer. MTD gives new members a beautiful welcome gift when they join - at no cost. When I received mine, I was still new to digital scrapping and was wholly in awe of the amazing papers, embellishments and alphas that were included.

Gloria was also my mentor when I started sharing my own papers and embellishments, which I create myself. Her input was totally amazing and appreciated. Gloria - I thank you so very much. You are SUCH an amazing friend and kindred spirit.

This summer I am working back in the Catskills. The area is beautiful, but the internet connection is minimal at best. Between losing my Sony laptop on the way north last spring, and the slow connection, I have had the summer from heck trying to upload freebies to share.

I finally connected with MediaFire. Uploads are slow, but they get there, even without thumbnails. Unfortunately, the FTP Moo Two uses, did not work for me. I did not want to share this add-on kit until it was safely at Moo Two Designs. I finally finished uploading it to MediaFire yesterday, and Gloria generously placed them on the Moo Two ftp, and sent word that it's there.

Now I can share my part with you. Two items are not listed on the preview - one edge and one insert trim.

I'm still creating accessories to go with the papers. I have a few projects to finish here first, then will upload them.

Twelve Paper freebies, inspired by The Catskills

Hello there. While fretting over my pickup truck's recent, erratic behaviour, as well as a travel companion who first injured his leg, then his back, I went on a cathartic creative frenzy and designed these twelve papers to share with you. When downloading them, be sure to grab a copy of the sampler/Tou , as each paper is numbered so you can download the ones you want, and it makes a handy reference for future needs.

The top image was created from the papers as well as companion elements which I will add in a separate file shortly. The frame and journal block will also be included in that kit.

Good morning -

One of our challenges in Moo Two Designs this month was to create a mini-add-on kit with a stripe and color theme. This is my contribution. Not huge, but hopefully just enough to use with your own creations. I did create a LO using my basic kit which I will add later as I need to put together another add-on for Moo Two's new, exciting Welcome kit for new members (there's some really good stuff in that mega kit. If you've been considering joining - it's free - this would be an excellent time).

When I created a LO using this kit, I added images from a recent Hudson River cruise we took from Kingston, New York. Hence the name.

MediaFire does not have thumbnails for the PNG files, but the brads and frame are those shown here.

Summertime Fun Freebie

I finally gave up with uploading to 4Shared. As I can no longer submit most of my shares there for a reason they were unable, or willing, to figure out, I removed all my freebies from there and deleted all my files. If anyone would like to have me repost them on MediaFire, please let me know.

This freebie was created in response to a red, yellow and green-themed challenge on Moo Two designs. It is my part of an add-on challenge which I solely created to share as a freebie. Please enjoy, and show me what you create with these papers and embellishments. I hope you enjoy using them as much as I did creating them.

Update - June 15, 2009: Yippee! I FINALLY uploaded these two freebies to 4Shared - after downloading Firefox as a last resort. I apologize for the long delay in making them available and hope you enjoy them. (Click on the header to get the zip file at 4Shared).

After my unwitting 5-week long hiatus from digital arts, I was surprised to find my emotions in a bit of an upheaval on getting back into the 'Creative Groove' again. Perhaps it's like riding a bike - it does indeed come back.

The new Gateway laptop from Best Buy is working well overall. The extra space is a huge help, and my first 64-bit computer is mostly compatible, although my new Seagate EHD is temporarily unusable as it only wants to work with 32 - an updated driver is a must, but I have to catch up a bit on other things before I do so. In the meantime my smaller Maxtor One Touch is behaving itself again.

Thanks to Best Buy's decision to replace my Sony Vaio, I had enough room left in my budget to treat myself to the new Wacom Intuos 4 drawing tablet. I also used my down time to order upgraded versions of programs such as Corel Painter 11, and Corel Office X4.

Painter and my Wacom tablet play a huge part in my creativity, along with PSP x2 Ultimate and DIS 2006. Until the new version of Painter, saving elements was a bit awkward as it offered PSP, but not PNG options. To my great delight, PNG has been added - thank you Painter!

As much as I enjoy creating my own papers and elements, it's always good to work with someone else's kits. Janalynn is a new designer at Moo Two designs and now heading the Paint the Barn Colour Challenge, after taking over from one of my favorite designers, and dear friends, Gloria Val Verde.

Janalyn's challenge was to create two quick pages using her kit, 'Bold and Fresh', and we were encouraged to recolor and add our own inspirations.

Today's image shows my contributions to the challenge. Janalyn's elements are charming, but I was particularly taken with her papers. Thumbnails don't give the full impact. After creating the diamond-shaped frame from a striped paper, I started to play with the background papers. Placing the turquoise paper behind my frame I had my first great look at the paper and knew I had to take it farther, incorporating it more into my overall design.

One more copy, then I extracted the beautiful greenery spray and recolored it, enhancing the color and depth to give more vibrancy to my QP. I also made one more copy of the altered piece, reduced and added it to the top right corner to overlap the frame slightly. Adding shadow was the final bit of 'oomph' I needed to give it more depth.

The second quick page was also fun to design. The blue focal flower in the cluster was created from the striped paper. I used two papers for the background which I applied transparencies to.

Using one of the kit's frames, I coped and flipped it for a book illusion. Adding a slightly curved distortion gave it a nice curvature. Again, the striped paper was added - this time as a journaling block, then altered to create a lighter-colored surface. The frame is placed between the red and blue layers for softness. Using my lasso tool, I outlined the open frame area, then lightened it with an even transparency, rather than opening it up altogether. An image placed behind will have a slightly softer look to it.

Unfortunately, 4Shared has decided to cause me grief since yesterday. I'm having difficulty uploading the QPs to share, but will post the links as soon as they're ready.

It feels sooooo good to be back at my 'digital' drawing board!

Rainbows for Middletown, NY Best Buy and their Geek Squad

The nightmare is over. After finally being made aware of all that happened after I left my computer at the Middletown, NY Best Buy, General Manager, Dan Carver really listened. At the same time, Elizabeth, from Corporate, emailed me in response to my blog woes, and vowed to really look into the whole situation.

After getting my computer back to the store, it was determined that my laptop crash could not be undone and the Dan authorized a replacement. Tonight's post is the first written on my new laptop computer, which I picked up this morning after Tony went over everything with me. Thank you so much Tony. It was ready before I got to the store - what a wonderful surprise.

I have to give special commendations to Dan Carver, for standing up to the plate and being more than fair in his decision and genuine goodwill. Also to Middletown's Geek Squad techs, Brian, Tony, and Mark for their patience and encouragement in helping me get what I needed. Special thanks go to Elizabeth for her continued support and reaching out far beyond her boundaries. And now, I must add one more thank you - to Kenny, the salesman who helped me with my choice for a new computer, listening to how I use it. He worked with me for two evenings, never pushing me to hurry up, and unaware that it was a special circumstance. It was a complex order to write up, but he did it admirably and deserves recognition.

Ironically, on the way home last night, Mark called. As I was driving I said I would call back. We stopped for a bite of dinner in a heavy downpour. I called back while we sat in the truck waiting for the rain to ease up. Just as I finished thanking Marc for all their help, the rains stopped and a magnificent double rainbow - full arc - lit up the sky and I commented on it to Mark.

I'm a strong believer in Messages from Above. As soon as that rainbow burst open I knew that I was getting confirmation that, finally, all was well.

I told Mark, Elizabeth, and Dan, that I had one more blog post to add - this one - but I also knew that it would be a bit tricky as I do believe in being fair and giving credit where it's due.

But I also abhor those consumers who abuse genuine decency.

Best Buy took a huge leap when they reached out to me. Most importantly, they regained my trust in the manner that they brought the whole episode to it's conclusion.

This post is not about trying to get something for nothing, or getting upset expecting 'gimmies'. It's about learning to listen to each other - to reach out and find a fair resolution between consumer and merchant.

Letting things get as far out of hand as my situation was, solves nothing. By those I mentioned above having the courage to step up and address it was truly amazing. It's hard to try and be a peacemaker when the venom is shooting out from all sides, and that's what it had come down to. Pure, evil venom.

Dan Carver's staff and Elizabeth jumped in, regardless of the bitterness. Not only did they calm me down (Mark gets credit for the first move there when he quietly let me know that my wrath was not directed at him as I was approaching him for the first time. And I have apologized and thanked them all), but they worked with me, without apparent complaint, until all was resolved satisfactorily.

Thank you all. I won't forget this.

Best Buy Update - and first glimmer of encouragement

This has been an evening of hopeful surprises.

Borrowing a computer briefly this morning, I checked on the status of my computer - again - and saw that it left Kentucky on Friday, May 8, en route to the Best Buy in Middletown, New York, where the nightmare began on April 18, 2009.

As we were planning to meet friends in Middletown for a belated Mothers' Day dinner at TGIFridays, I checked one more time before we left - but was unable to get to the status screen at the Geek Squad's site again. Naturally that only fueled the wrath I've been venting lately.

After a delightful dinner, we stopped by Best Buy to see what was happening.

Obviously, my cool is long gone, after bumping my head against brick walls for weeks.

Mark was the Geek Squad tech who was unlucky enough to get me, and calmly kept repeating that being angry at him would resolve nothing as he had never even seen me before. (He was correct in that.) He told me that my laptop was indeed in transit, expected back in the store by May 13, but it could be another day or two before I could get it back as they still had to restore it. Michael asked him for the tracking number, which Michael gave him - the FIRST real effort we received since taking it in. Michael then asked for the general manager's name and asked when he would be in.

Mark personally brought Dan Carver, the store's general manager over to us. Knowing full well that my rage was at its peak, he calmly asked me some pertinent questions and allowed me to express my frustration. Mark showed him on the computer where Roy, from Corporate had called on Saturday, May 9, to try and find out what was going on. Unfortunately, the rest of my calls had never been recorded. I pulled out my cell phone to show him all the calls I have made since April 18 - to the store, as well as to corporate.

Well, Mr Carver wasn't too happy - and told me matter-of-factly that in my shoes he would be even more furious. He even commented that lack of communication is something he does not tolerate in his store. I gave him the names of those I spoke to in the store - and truly feel that he will be addressing them.

He has promised to telephone me as soon as my computer arrives back in the store, and guarantees that I will have a properly running laptop again.

Feeling better than I have since I left it at the Middletown Best Buy, we returned home, but my stomach took quite awhile to calm down.

It turns out that there was one more surprise in store - a surprising comment on my blog from Elizabeth, of Best Buy's online communities - also offering to look deeper into my situation, which she also agrees has issues which need to be resolved.

Am I doing a 'Happy Dance'? Unfortunately, no. Hopefully, my situation will encourage Best Buy to really look at their customers' issues and help them communicate more efficiently with each other as well as with their customers. Before my first vent here on my blog, I had called the store several times, and been blatantly lied to, then called corporate, where I thought I was being heard - but no follow-through came through as promised.

Dan Carver said he was first made aware of my plight last Saturday, on May 9, when Roy, from Customer Relations called for update information while I was talking to him on another line. Dan was completely unaware that I had tried to get answers before that. When Roy tried to connect me with Donald, who I had spoken to a few days earlier, and who had started a case number for me . . . the line was busy, and a request for a return call was never made . . . again.

All I asked for was honesty - not lies to try to mollify me that would be discovered later.

I would very much like to regain faith in Best Buy. I'm a full time RVer and Workamper. There are thousands of us around the US and Canada alone. We all talk and listen to each other - communications are our prime topic - most of us are retired grandparents, and the greater majority of us are college-educated.

Our top concerns include: digital cameras, cell phone coverage and service, laptop computers, reputable merchants and after-sale service providers, and wireless providers.

The internet is our connection tool, and Best Buy is one store that can serve many of our needs. We need to know that there are places we can go across the country for sales and service. Their sales staff is generally terrific, and I am well-known for asking to see a manager to give an employee a well-deserved 'attaboy' - I've even contacted corporates to commend a manager . . . but all it takes is one inexcusably poor service experience, such as I've been through, and up go red flags.

Today is the first day I've seen potential signs of seeds of hope. I would love to see them grow and flourish, and feel good about Best Buy again. Thank you for stepping up to the plate, Mark, Dan Carver, and even Elizabeth - who still has no clue as to what this is all about - but at least made the gesture. That's a HUGE step of encouragement in itself.

Warning - Stay away from Best Buy's Geek Squad

It's already Saturday, May 9, 2009

Since my last vent, my dealings with Best Buy and the Geek Squad have severely deteriorated. And my computer remains at the Kentucky service center - I haven't seen it since April 18, 2009.

Ironically, even though my Sony Vaio crashed, I feel that Sony went above and beyond in helping me. I was not charged for the 3 recovery discs, nor the follow-up telephone call, when the tech gave me the information on the codes. It is out of Sony's warranty time frame, and I was willing to pay for both, but they generously waived the fees, although I did pay for overnight shipping. So, to Sony, I say "Thank You".

As of yesterday, I have placed 22 telephone calls to Best Buy, including the store and their corporate offices in Minnesota. They have called me . . . TWICE! One was to tell me my computer was fine and ready to pick up - on April 19 (it wasn't), and the other from a Minnesota 'guru' named Trisha - AFTER I called her and left a message. She told me I could contact her any time for updates on the repair in Kentucky. I waited almost a week to call - so I certainly didn't browbeat her in any way . . . but when I DID call back and leave meassages on May 4, 5, and 6, I discovered that the call back number was bogus (It DID get to Best Buy, but was listed as 'unassigned'. Fortunately I was able to find the original number I spoke to her on - EVERY call - to and from Best Buy - is still on my phone.

Now, the Geek Squad sends an email (if you can use another computer while you have none - really dumb, Best Buy and Geek Squad, when I've told you BOTH that I need telephone feedback, not emails that I may or may not get because you effing have my computer (Can't imagine why I've lost my cool in this matter . . . ).

On the information-free email is your currect service order number with a 'link' to the Geek Squad to see the service updates . . . oh yeah, you better copy that number down . . . the link is bogus - not only will NO ONE pick up when you call Middletown, New York's Geek Squad extension, but 'click here' on the 'service update' does not connect and you have to open a new window and enter www.geeksquad.com directly. Then you can paste in the number and area code associated with your sale and log onto 'Track my repair'.

Apparently, the Geek Squad is supposed to send out daily updates on service work . . .

there are now, FOUR entries.

April 20: Awaiting shipment to Service Center (7:30 am - Monday morning - not a holiday)

April 22: Shipped to Service Center (7:30 Wednesday morning - why didn't it go sooner?0

April 24: Received at Service Center (mangager, Trisha at Middletown Best Buy told me they were receiving it on the 27th, when I called for an update . . . but failed to level with me, unaware I had already seen the sparse info on my repair - as posted online.)

May 8: Awaiting final inspection and shipment (I wonder how long THAT will take?)

So. Now those few short lines suggest that my computer is fixed and purring again . . . we'll see.

At corporate I have now spoken with Danny, Trisha, Donald and Roy . . . Danny and Roy get a LITTLE bit of grace as Danny passed me over to Trisha and Roy tried to pass me back to Donald - who may get credit for opening a case file number on my repair (if that isn't simply another lame ploy to buy more time. Roy eventually passed the buck back to Donald . . . who never answered HIS phone nor called me back as requested before I went to work at 2 pm yesterday.

According to my service plan, if an item is taken in for repairs three times, Best Buy, at ITS discretion, can replace the item. Considering that there are now THREE service order numbers associated with my laptop computer, it seems that they should quit screwing me over and do precisely that at this point.

Yesterday, Roy, after calling the Geek Squad in Middletown (who, surprise, surprise, never picked up the phone) and calling Trisha ( who ALSO has forgotten how to answer a phone), did delve a little deeper and was told that there is nothing wrong with my computer and it's being sent back to Middletown for me to pick up.)

What am I missing here? Trisha told me that a 'part' had to be ordered which was 'holding up' the repair, and they weree planning on replacing my hard drive which appeared to be 'worn out' (Sony's error codes indicate bad memory AND hard drive), Middletown originally told me that it had to be reformatted - AFTER I received the 'Come and get it' email . . . then assigned a new Service order number and sent it off to Kentucky.)

Now I know for a fact, that the Recovery Discs have done SOMETHING - whether good or bad we will obviously see. And if there is 'nothing wrong', why was it at the Service Center from April 24 until now?????

For the moment, that's where things stand on my end - no valid resolution - and my computer being who-knows-where.

As a full-time, Workamping RVer, I have contact with thousands of other laptop computer owners, who, like me, spend good money on their machines and are willing to shell out extra for GOOD, extended warranties. And links to my blog WILL be posted to RV web sites to 'Let the Consumer Be Aware'.

Unfortunately, before taking it to Middletown, New York, I should have commented on my situation to the other Workampers and management of the park I'm at this summer.

I will repeat, the I did feel that the Geek Squad in Menassas, Virginia, DID try to get my computer up and running properly - in THREE DAYS, from April 11 - April 14 (they were closed on Easter Sunday). Unfortunately, all they were able to really do was get it back online - the graphics and text were almost unreadable - but they did advise me to contact Sony for the recovery discs and take it to a Best Buy closer to where I would be working.

Yrsterday, alone, after going to work seething after my latest unsatisfactory go-around with Best Buy and the Geek Squad on the phone, I was grumbling about the whole scenario and opened a Pandora's Box of vitriol.

The owner's mother told me that she, too, will NEVER return to the Middletown New York Best Buy and Geek Squad after they nearly destroyed her laptop computer while 'repairing' it and having to fight all the way, as I am doing now, for any type of resolution which was never satisfactory. My supervisor's husband took HIS laptop to the same place. It too, was supposed to go to a service center - but, after 8 days, was STILL on the shelf in Middletown, untouched. He finally wrote a

Right now I am NOT a Happy Camper. My laptop crashed 3 weeks ago while we were en route to the Catskills from Florida. I took it to Best Buy, in Menassas, Virginia - where I have a service contract on it. They worked on it the three days I was there and did get my internet up and running, but the quality of the screenwas terrible.

When we arrived in the Catskills, I contacted Sony, who sent me the recovery discs. I tried to install them -but lost my entire operating system. I telephoned Sony with the error codes and was told that the ram and driver needed replacing as they were both corrupt. They advised that I take the computer back to Best Buy with the info and recovery discs.

Off I went to Middletown, New York, Best Buy last Saturday. On Sunday a tech called to say that there was nothing wrong with my computer other than it needed to be reformatted. I was thrilled . . . but when no further call came the next day, I called back, only to be told that there was indeed a problem and it needed to be sent to their service center after I approved it. I was furious that no one had bothered to call me so it could get going.

Yesterday I called back for an update - and NO ONE in the Geek Squad picked up the phone. I called the store and it was picked up on the second ring - very poor customer service. I handle reservations at a campground - that phone is NEVER allowed to ring more than 4 times. It rang 50 times - each ring approxomately 5 seconds long - do the math - that's terrible customer service.

Now I'm told that it may be another 2 weeks before I get my computer back, and I have quite a bit of important work to address which I need it for - let alone creating Mother's Day cards. The service tech, Misha, wouldn't even confirm that I will get a phone call . He kept saying I would be 'contacted'. When I emphasized that it HAS to be by phone as I don't have open access to a computer, he refused to confirm that I would hear from them by telephone.

Right now, I am NOT happy with Best Buy's Geek Squad in Middletown, New York, and will not be giving them a positive evaluation.

If anyone who reads this has had positive service with another computer repair company , I would be interested in the info, if I have to purchase another computer.

(I have had great service with Computer Renaissance, but there isn't one near here, and I did purchase a Best Buy Service Contract when I bought my Sony about 14 months ago.0

It's Time For a LONG Overdue new look

When it comes to HTML code or computer jargon, I am NOT the smartest woman on the block. Nor do I aim to be. Give me my Wacom tablet, a couple of graphics programs I enjoy, such as Painter, PSP, and DIS (shame on you, Microsoft, for letting that gem go), and I'm happy, happy happy!

Unfortunately, there are times when my lack of computer knowledge gets somewhat frustrating, especially where creating blog graphics is concerned. Some time ago I was able to create a header, but when I returned to the link to polish it a bit - it was gone - ugh!

When Mike's daughter (http://cardsbyivy.blogspot.com/) called to tell me about entering the Blog World, I commented that I had been trying to locate directions for creating my own backgrounds. Ivy found a delightful site, www.thecutestblogontheblock.com/ which offers delightful FREE blog backgrounds, and even better, a great tut for creating your own.

Off I went to design one, working around the theme of my existing logo. Overall, the tut was great - with only two minor frustrations - when I followed the guidelines, my design was too wide. Cindy, from happypupdesigns, took a look and made an invaluable comment - to tighten it up and add solid outside edges so those with smaller computers could see the design. Instead of the solid outer edges, I simply moved my side designs in, and it worked just fine.

The more irritating surprise was the Minima LO I followed - for some reason, my header art decided to march off to the right and my slide shows were chopped in half.

Again, Cindy came through, explaining that I had to resize my header and customize my slide show widths. Once I made those adjustments, everything started to balance out.

I'm almost there, but fighting a miserable migraine today. RhondaSue, from http://craftymumzcreations@blogspot.com/ has some adorable side bar artwork which I admire. (She also has some great templates - go take a peek!). Thanks to Cindy making me aware of the side column width, I was able to create side bar headers too.

The first two are done, but I still need to revamp and update the rest of the info there. So please be patient with me. Hopefully I'll be caught up before we head north this weekend, as I won't have much internet time until we reach New York about April 15.

Time to head back north already

This winter has flown far too fast. Next weekend we start working our way north. Now, we are SUPPOSED to be heading towards Elkhart, Indiana first - but watching the weather in the Midwest,we may have to do some reconsidering. Fargo, ND is in a grim flood zone - with blizzards and bitter cold. It's a scary thought. We've had to evacuate from hurricanes in Louisiana and Florida and even a flood in Pennsylvania - but at least the weather was warm, and it was easy to flee from danger with our fifth wheel behind us. The northerrn climates are another matter - it's not so easy to keep warm and escape. Even the weather pattern clear down to the Florida panhandle is disconcerting. Today we closed up our awning and took down the screen house as the winds were really starting to blow and a wicked front is even expected in our direction.

If the weather gods decide we can't get to Michigan and Indiana this spring, we'll head that way after we finish our summer back at Jellystone Park in Woodridge, NY. We learned to never try to make concrete plans as they seem to go somewhat awry when we do so.

We've just spent 3 delightful months at Turtle Creek RV Resort in Homosassa. The price is reasonable - quite a shocker for Florida in the winter when the snowbirds encourage RV parks to really raise their prices. We're also close to Homosassa State Park, a wonderful wildlife preserve.

The critters in today's image live here at the RV resort. They're all wild, but seem to like this environment. We keep hoping to see the young ospreys before we leave, but it's beginning to look doubtful. We have two small and one larger American Alligator - and even a Cayman. Apparently it was a pet that was released into the wild a few years ago. The turtles (Cooters) are huge and interesting to watch. When the gators aren't hungry they'll share logs in the creek to sun themselves on. It's quite a sight to see.

I do have some shares to add. It's been a busy time creating papers and embellishments almost non-stop, plus I've been creating digital crafts quite a bit for both one interactive online group as well as an active crafts group here at the park.

If we can't get to Indiana, we'll head north along the east coast and stop near Michael's daughter's place in Virginia for a few days. She called me this evening and has just started her first blog. Pop over and visit when you get a chance. http://cardsbyivy@blogspot.com/

Happy 2009 EVERYONE!

We've moved to a delightful park in Homosassa, Florida for the rest of our winter visit, but it has only one drawback - grim internet service. I don't like to put internet companies down, but we've dealt with Tengo internet all over the country - because there were no other viable options - and it's fair-to-middlin on a good day, and severely overpriced to boot. GRIM,GRIM,GRIM!

There. That's my gripe out of the way. Fortunately, Homosassa Springs' beautiful new library is less than two miles away and they have WiFi for no charge - AND - we can use our own laptops.

I created a challenge layout on MooTwo Designs using these frames which I created from a lighthouse on nearby Monkey Island. I tried, in vain, to upload them to 4Shared from the campground, and finally put them on a flash drive so I could come to the library to post them. They are CU, but please show me how you use them as I love to see your creations. Also, they are my own artwork, so please be courteous and give me credit when you do so.

Next week this time we will have a new president. I know we all expect impressive things from him, but let's give President Obama a chance. The mess our country is in wasn't created overnight, and it isn't fair to expect him to pull off miracles immediately.

Yesterday we went to the huge RV show in Tampa. On the tram, going around the grounds, a couple sat behind us. Of course the conversation turned to 'The Miracle on the Hudson'. The husband was a retired pilot who once worked with our newest National Hero and said he has always been air-safety conscious, and knew that he was the one pilot who stood a chance to save his passengers and crew under such conditions. He had some wonderful stories to share with us which many around also were fascinated by.

Yesterday was an experimental day. I was considering creating new elements with a more springy feel but had recently downloaded the free shadow box by Osa Honey, altering it a bit to add depth.

All other images, elements and paper are my own creations, with the exception of the doily, which was made for me by Ivy Frank.

To round out 2008, I thought you might enjoy the vase, doily and bow embellies. They are all at 300DPI in PNG format and are NOT for CU.

There are two files in the zip - the red vase, bow and doily as one set and the same three individual items in grey scale to color as you will.

Michigan Christmas 2008

Here's a layout incorporating my previous two freebies. When I get new images of my grandchildren I love to incorporate them into new, original layouts. The elements and papers are always relaxing to create and sharing them with other digital scrappers who will enjoy using them in their own creations is a great feeling.

My visits to SW Michigan are all too rare. The few weeks we get each year is so precious to me. We don't even have to go anywhere. I can do that all across the country. The time together is everything. Working on layouts such as this help me extend my time - especially if I've taken the images. (My son's wife took the one of his 4 which I separated to add them to their respective ornaments). This one was enhanced by having my two youngest grandchildren fighting over my lap as they watched their cousins, aunt, mama, GrannieMonster and Great-Grandma Marie join them on their Christmas tree page. Annika really wants to play with tubes and draw in my Painter program . . . but then she also strongly suggests that I leave my drawing tablet here when I leave! We have a great time creating things together . . .memories to hold me over until our next visit.

My annual visit to my children and grandchildren is almost over. I created a Layout today using my QP below and some of these frames which I will post in the morning. For those of you getting those last-minute cards made, these work well by themselves mounted to chipboard for hanging ornaments as well as in a layout. Tomorrow I have to finish up my letters so I can get my Holiday Booklets in the mail. I hope to have them on their way before returning to Florida.

We've enjoyed two days of sunshine - the snow is off the trees, and the roads are clear again. Unlike Houston where they are having some strange weather. Drive safe everyone and keep warm.

Michigan Winter Background Freebie (click here)

I'm in Michigan for two weeks. It has snowed everyday, giving me great images to work with. I decided to create a background freebie today while my youngest two grandchildren are off to Kindergarten and day care. All the background papers were created by me using this tree as the base. The tree star, ribbon garland and ruffled edges are more creations from the snowflake ornaments and papers I've been sharing here on my blog recently.

I thought some of you who downloaded the ornaments and snowflake frames might like a tree to hang them from, then add your own unique messages on the right side for a personalized card front.

It's part of my plan, but I have to wait until I can get images of my son, Stephen's children to add to my own layout. He's 40 today - imagine that! We were supposed to get together for a late Thanksgiving on Saturday, but the winter storm was just to dicey to risk. Now we're hoping to go down tonight, but the weather may again have something else to say about that. We'll see.

My flight to Michigan was a total delight. My daughter told me of a new non-stop service from Florida to Kalamazoo starting on November 29 for $239 round-trip. I jumped on that potential and had my reservations made before she had a chance to cll me back. They offer dirct flights from either Sanford or Punta Gorda, Florida. I opted for Punta Gorda as we usually winter near Ft Myers . . . not this year. We're in Port Richie, about 120 miles north - but it was well worth the pre-dawn drive. Leaving from smaller airports is always less stressful, and the staff at Punta Gorda were incredible. Friendly and relaxed TSA staff and ticket agents. Everyone was smiling as they came through Security, knowing there were no long layovers looming in Cincinnatti, Detroit or Atlanta!

Many of the travelers on the inaugural fight to Michigan were long-time friends who hadn't seen each other for quite some time, totally unaware they would be meeting up with each other. And the plane was terrific. The airline crew was delightful, the plane was comfortable and no flight glitches, other than arriving a lttle late.

Both my daughters were at Kalamazoo waiting for me. Talk about a great start to my two-week visit. I've been having a wonderful time with them and my youngest two grands - but am now rather behind with other projects I planned to get done while they were in school. But that's ok too. Now to spend some time with my Brthday Boy and his family and a trip to Dearborn next week to see my Mom and I will be a totally happy grannie before I return to Florida.

For us crafters, the Holiday Season is in full swing. For years I've happily cut out snowflakes on the Make-a-Flake site, but never did anything with them. This year I decided to see how I could experiment with some of them and came up with this freebie to share with you. There are 14 total elements - 2 ball ornaments, 5 snowflakes, ornament cap and jump ring, one paper overlay and 4 papers for you to play with. I didn't lck the jump ring on top of the regular snowflakes so that you could have more flexibility with them.

Only the gold paper is NOT related to a snowflake. The other 3 papers, overlay and even the enamel-looking ornament all originated from these snowflakes.

I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed creating them, and would love to see how you apply them. The enamelled ornament is the largest item, size-wise , and these are zipped into a total of 7 folders. The papers are 12 X 12, 300 dpi jpeg, the overlay is 12 X 12, 300 dpi png and the ornaments/snowflakes are 6X6, 300 dpi png. The jump ring/ornament topper are also 300 dpi, png

We are now in Port Richey, Florida - hopefully for the winter - but have been experiencing some unusually chilly weather, with a freeze expected overnight tonight. Not typical for the Tampa area. We never thought we would be running the furnace and not the ac down here!

Two of our Workamping friends are right across the street at another RV park. It's great to have friends and family nearby. It will be a great winter this year. If I don't get back here before Thanksgiving - have a wonderful holiday with your friends and loved ones.

Time to Sit for a Spell

It's been quite a journey from New York's Catskills on October 14 to Port Richey, Florida, where we arrived about noon today.

In the intervening 3 1/2 weeks, I've lost a sister-in-law to devastating cancers, voted for our 44th president and passed my 62nd birthday. talk about highs and lows.

Internet connections have been spotty at best - the biggest surprise was in the hunt for an RV park near Tampa for the winter - rates vary to huge extremes - and very few offer WiFi - that major necessity in this day and age.

We're a bit further north of Tampa than we were hoping for, but the rate is reasonable, we're about a mile from the Gulf - and the park has excellent WiFi - so now I can catch up with everyone and all my fun digital scrapping challenges. Friends we worked with this summer are staying right across the street, and my brother is in Clearwater -28 miles south of here.

Driving over here today I came to the realization that it may be necessary to start a second blog - sounds a bit odd, as often as I get behind here. But this one has become more crafts-oriented, which wasn't my original intent - but I enjoy it and want to keep this one as is - more crafts-focused. But, I think I need to add one dedicated to my lifestyle - where my travel companion, Michael, can add his two cents worth - and he does love to rant on in a way that I'm often uncomfortable with. He will have an issue in that it isn't like an open chat room where he gets instant feedback - but it would keep him occupied while I play with all of you here on my own journey. I think that's a good thing,

Today's image is a good example of how I've been playing with my digital scrapping, using my images to create embellishments and papers to enhance my images. This month, Donna, at moo Two Designs, gave my dear friend, Gloria Val Verde, my first guest designer kit - 'Gingham Medley' for a challenge prize. I am so honored. Creating the odds and ends is so much fun - but everytime I take a new series of images, I immediately start creating papers and related embellies. Now that I'm back with a regular WiFi connection, I need to get focused and complete some of them. Not just snippets.

With that in mind, I need to catch up on some backlogged emails.

Talk about a busy two days off. The campground closes for the year on Columbus Day, and I'll be heading south on Tuesday or Wednesday after that. I've been busy 'decluttering' my 'house on wheels' - what a job that's proving to be - but necessary,

Between the cleanup I've been taking off with my camera to grab the gorgeous Fall Color Extravaganza, before the wind and rain finish knocking all the leaves off the trees.

Niagara Falls, 2008

What a treat! We took a mini-vacation to Niagara Falls last week, staying in Canada. The weather was perfect and the leaves just beginning to turn. As Michael had never been there before we took advantage of one of the package deals at Howard Johnson's on Victoria Ave. The room was great - even a Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom - I sure took advantage of great soaking baths wile we were there!

We received two breakfast vouchers at Denny's for $25 each morning, and one supper voucher for $45 which we used across the street at TGIF. Word to the wise, DO NOT eat out at Niagara Falls, Canada - the prices are beyond atrocious. You know those Denny's breakfast Slams that run well under $10 here? - Try starting out at $13 - and a cup of coffee for $3.25. Even with the vouchers, we still spent more than $20 out-of-pocket for breakfast alone. The supper was within the $45, only costing an extra $15 for taxes and tips (no, we had no alcohol!). The first evening we stopped at a hot dog stand on Clifton Hill while we watched the fabulous ferris wheel - $15 for 2 hot dogs and two pops - no fries or extra goodies!

Everything else was great. Our package included free shuttle service to Cliff Rock, passes for the great people Mover, Incline railroad, Maid of the Mist, Butterfly Conservatory, Journey Behind the Falls and the Gorge River Walk. That package definitely paid for itself.

The last time I was there - about 10 years ago, I stayed at a delightful campground near the Aero Car. Now a Great Wolf Resort Lodge stands on the same property - I can't believe how much expansion is going on. Even the American side boasts a casino now - where we met my aunt and uncle for lunch on our way back.

Crossing the border was smooth in both directions. Fortunately I had a copy of my birth certificate as a driver's license and either birth certificate or passport are now mandatory or you will not be permitted to enter Canada. On the return trip the customs fellow took a bit longer waving us through - I guess they check documents more carefully these days, but we were finally allowed to pass without any problems.

The gardens and hanging baskets were as beautiful as I remembered and the Falls are still mesmerizing, by day and by night. I was asked to show some of my images from the trip, so created a layout using my own images and artwork. The acrylic gel alpha is a freebie from Gunhild Storeide, a wonderful commercial artist. Thank you again, Gunhild - and for all your great leads - I really appreciate them.

It's after 11 already and I still need to make a couple more 'cyber-stops' before I call it a night.

A Halloween Ghost Freebie

Things are a bit quiet in the office during the week now, but that doesn't mean my work load is any lighter - although it's definitely less stressful. We expect a quieter weekend ahead, then the rest are almost at capacity until we close for the season after Columbus Day.

Today I was allowed to bring my laptop to work and edit images I took of the campground and area. I managed to download 35 to a CD. After viewing those the owner and his mom simply requested more. It's a great way to enjoy being busy, that's for sure.

I also played around with some whimsical ideas in PainterX and DIS2006. For MooTwo Designs I created a brag Book Quick Page, and shared the ghost above with TLC Creations as well. It's "Happy Dance" Time

I have just been added as a Guest Designer at Moo Two Designs. That makes me extremely happy as it gives me the incentive to create digital scrapping images to share - now - for free - until I'm ready to start selling my work as a full designer in their excellent store.

"Music in the Air" - at left - is 99%my own creation. ( The one exception is the music frame edge which is in DIS 2006 - my primary photo-editing program.)

The August/September, Holiday Hoedown Challenge has a music theme, but I was unable to find a font or music embellishments to convey my muse.

Off I went to my favorite drawing program (Painter X) and doodled until the letters and music took on a shape I liked. The background paper I created a while ago from another whim (using PSP XI) - I have many of those!

The image is from a rest area near Tampa's Skyway Bridge. The seagulls were everywhere that day and I took several images of them. It was easy to add a third bird to the base image as the shadows were all consistent.

The Moo Two administrators are wonderful in letting us use elements and papers from other designers as well as our own. it was one of the factors that drew me to their group originally. Their helpfulness and genuine friendship is another.

Moo Two Designs has a wonderful store filled with exciting designers who generously share freebies with everyone. They would have every right to restrict outside influences - instead, they embrace and welcome such. That says a great deal to me. And in that I doubt that I am alone.

We're already at the end of another month of great challenges at Moo Two Designs. I didn't get them all done (again) for July/August, and took a peek at some I missed yesterday.

My dear friend, Gloria Val Verde, had also overlooked this template challenge, quickly creating one, indicating that it was 'fun' and 'easy'. Sure, Gloria.

It probably should have been, but the shape of the tag seemed like a dandy to use my butterly freebies I shared with you the other day, as well as some papers I recently made plus my latest whimsey, a charm bracelet I've been creating. Saving all in PNG format, it meant resizing everything, including jump rings and charms. The papers are from a kit I'm creating, named 'Daisy Do'

It turned out a bit 'elegant' for a tag, but I felt good about it when it was complete. I thought you would enjoy seeing the butterflies put to use.

An Unexpected Sort of Day

August is here already. One more month and it will be time to hook up the truck and fifth wheel and say farewell to the Catskills. This summer has been so full of wonderful sights and terrific management staff, coworkers and seasonal campground guests.

The images in the top layout are from Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park at Birchwood Acres in Woodridge, New York, where I've been working since April. The bottom layout features some of the area sights - there's something for everyone here. Last Tuesday we took a drive along Rt 97 - much of which follows - or was part of - the former D & H Canal. We stopped at the Roebling bridge - built as an aqueduct across the Delaware River, bringling the former canal from Honesdale, PA , to Rondout, NY. Now it is a single-lane car bridge and automobile traffic crosses it instead of mule-driven river barges. I chose to walk across the unique suspension bridge (which was designed by the builder of the Brooklyn Bridge) along the towpathfrom New York to Pennsylvania. While crossing I was treated to the sight of a magnificent bald Eagle who calmly sat at the top of a tall pine tree, watching the river rafters floating by lazily below.

The Zane Grey Museum is close by on the Pennsylvania side, where the Lackawaxen and Delaware Rivers meet. Michael located the camp he once attended, over 6 decades ago - and later spent summers working as a waiter. It's closed now - a few of the old buildings are faintly visible through the overgrowth, but much of the property has since been sold and is home to delightful homes and beautiful gardens. Unfortunately the museum was closed, but the drive from Pt Jervis was beautiful.

Fortunately, I gave up my day off yesterday to fill in for a coworker. Unfortunately, it did not end up being an extra day as I woke up with a strange virus this morning and was unable to work. Friday is the worst day to be adsent in Reservations as our phones start ringing well before 9 am and don't slow down til about two - when the mass weekend check-in begins. It's the first day I've missed since we arrived so I feel terrible about that, but definitely was unable to pull my weight over there.

After sleeping most of the unexpected day off I decided to see if I could stay awake long enough for a long-overdue blog entry. But now, it's time to go and lay back down again for awhile.

Recycled Lighthouse Patio Light Cover

OK, I admit it . . . I'm a compulsive recycleholic. There. It's an admitted fact. Fortunately, recycling is a good thing . . . until I start sqirrelling things away . . . and then it's not. Especially when I live in a house on wheels that's 8' wide (closed up) and 31' long. 'Storage' is severely restricted . . . until a fun brain fart like this one pops out and is well-received.

This project got its 'seed' from some square racketball sleeves. I've been making different awning light covers for some time that are more fragile, and the square sleeves are ideal to stack the light covers in and protect them in transit.

Jokingly, one of the girls in our campground store asked if I might want a tennis ball sleeve one day (we sell the balls individually and discard the empty sleeves). I took a couple home and then the idea came to turn them into awning light (or patio light) covers.

My original intent was to use a graphics program to create a pattern on my computer which I could print out and place inside the cylinder, then paint the design on the outside . . . obviously, during the process, a typical-for-me entirely different direction emerged.

About two years ago I found http://thecraftypc.com online. I don't recall what type of product I was Googling at the time - yes I do - transfer papers for the jigsaw puzzles featured in the right hand column here (which are great). While exploring The Crafty PC website I discovered Backlight Film - and a Wedding Light pattern that I've since redesigned into my awning light covers.

As my design emerged, it took on a life of its own. With the bottom of the cylinder painted black to become the top of the lighthouse, I only needed a flat pattern to roll up and insert into the cylinder. I used basic shapes which I filled with color then tweaked with filters (the red and white bands, door and windows). I then cut out the window panes and diamonds from the light room at the top.

Originally, I intended for these areas to remain clear, then decided to add a 'reflection'. Off to my digital images, and I opened one of my colorful Florida Sunsets and placed it as the bottom layer. Having previously cut away all the glass areas, I was able to work with the sunset image until it looked right through every window - but keeping in mind that the top light would be meeting along the seam.

Aftter that, I added greenery from an image of a flower bed here at the campground - again, being aware that it had to match up on the sides.

For a little added zest, it was back to my image collection and this time, the siding of a houseboat on nearby White Lake was the perfect accent for the shutters. To give them a bit more zing, I went to my digital scrapping collection and found hinges and potential door knob from Scrap Girls, Eternal Love kit.

Add a few pertinent shadows and a few other tweaks and I had my pattern.

I printed it out on The Crafty PC's Backlight Film and let it dry for a few hours. Two coats of The Crafty PC's Decal Finishing and Inkjet Overcoat Spray (again, letting it dry between coats), one last 2-hour drying spell, and I was able to trim the paper to size.

All I need now is to get the light hole for Christmas Tree lights drilled to size and I'll be ready to hang it. In the meantime, the second pattern is underway - I'm aiming for a set of six lights.

Stuff

I've been absent for awhile from my blog - mostly because I'm busy experimenting with making 'Stuff'!!!! Digital scrapping stuff. And having a great time learning how to create illusions. You old-timers may have forgotten your first thrill over creating that first button or bead - but I'm still amazed when I tweak something and give it that sense of realism.

Gloria Val Veerde, bless her heart, took me at my word when I told her I appreciated constructive feedback on layouts I create for Moo Two Designs . She's realized that I have a somewhat quirky way of creating things that don't always follow preset standards (she was a huge help in explaining 'Dodge and burn' to me so I understood it.) Not only was I able to correct a faux pas on a page, but also figured out how to add depth to even that tiny step.

Often, while writing, drawing or editing images, an alternative idea will come to mind that demands to be worked out. And them I'm up all hours of the night exploring those ideas . . . but don't always write down HOW I got to my end effect - and that's really annoying. Anyhoo - here's a brief smattering of what I've been playing with. With the exception of the two grighter brown buttons, all the other papers and embellishments are taken from the tugboat in the image I shot while visiting Kingston's waterfront on the Hudson River in New York recently. The bottom beads are not finished - but any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated - and on that note - it's time for bed - g'nite, World!

Moo Two Designs designer, Gloria Val Verde, is the moderator of their monthly 'Impromptu Challenge'. For new/seasoned digital scrappers, Moo Two Designs offers a wide range of everything related to digital scrapping. All the members are helpful and encouraging - and really take the time to answer any questions or make suggestions.

This month, Gloria's 'Impromptu Challenge' is two create Brag Book Quick Pages using actually three of her kits - I've Got the Blues and Mini Monday 5 (freebie) in blue tones, and the green-themed I'm Feeling Green. Through the end of the month Gloria is offering the blue and green kits at a ridiculously low price that are worth far, far more. (No, she has no clue that I'm writing this on my blog).

I have never created Quick Pages before, so this was an intriguing project for me. When I work with my own images, I can do what I want with the papers and embellishments. In designing QPs, I discovered that I had to be aware of how someone might 'drop in' the images they wish to add in the future and create the pages so that doing so is not an insurmountable challenge.

Keeping that in mind was a whole new concept. These three kits had so many items I like - paisleys, plaids, tags, ribbons, journal papers, flowers, a calendar, and swirlies - just so many things to explore and experiment with. At first I was slightly daunted, but bit by bit everything fell into place and I'm sharing my first two pages here on my blog.

I also try to keep my slide shows updated, with my Moo Two layouts in a slide show of their own, as I do with TLC Creations, where I first started learning how to create Digital Scrap layouts a few months ago.

Woodstock Music and Arts Fair, 1969 - Revisited

This layout is a composite of my sensory feelings after visiting the MUSEUM at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts last Wednesday. The central image is three-in-one - the outside of the beautiful museum, a hippy-style bus - typical of many that crossed the country to get to the amazing music extravaganza which was held on these grounds in Bethel, New York on August 15, 16 and 17, 1969, and the present-day ampitheater, where music can still be heard across the Catskills on summer nights - but not at $6 per day.

My preceding blog which summarizes my experience at this amazing facility was too long to include the image, so I'm posting it separately. the MUSEUM at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts

Yes, sometimes we CAN go back in time . . .

. . . and the newly-opened MUSEUM at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, in Bethel, New York, is proof of that. With its emphasis on the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair, which was held on its grounds, August 15, 16 and 17, 1969, the whole 60's era is fully explored through visual and sensory sights, sounds and memories. The politics musical evolution, the Vietnam-era draft, the assassinations of the Kennedy Brothers and Dr martin Luther King, Jr, and Man's first steps on the moon. All of this, and so much more, is fully explored in an amazing museum which took three years to create.

Every 'Flower Power/Hippie' cliche came to mind as we passed through the entry doors of the beautiful building last Wednesday. It's a 'Happening' in its own right. If you were in attendance during those three memorable days in 1969, you recall that it was NOT held in Woodstock, New York.

After the promotor's family was threatened by local residents who rallied against the possibility of 10,000 'rabble-rousing hippies and druggies' invading their peaceful town for 3 days, another location was sought out. The second choice was beautiful White Lake - but as the attendee numbers appeared to be swell beyond the original figure, that site was considered too small.

Eventually a farmer named Gelish, with a great location in nearby Bethel,agreed at the last minute to host the Woodstock music extravaganza on his property, just outside the peaceful hamlet.

With peaceful, rolling hills, and magnificent views of the Catskills, the mood was set. Getting all the equipment, stage, fencing, and other requirements into position was another matter. It was a hopeless task, yet the stage hands and workers got it together - almost. The fencing never was completed.

Advance tickets were sold for $6.00 per day. Yup. $18 bought you three days of live music - from rock, to country, to soul, folk and everything in between. Getting the bands was a feat in itself - many did not want to perform in an outdoor field in rural New York. Eventually, new names, like Crosby, Stills and Nash as well as the young Greatful Dead and Janis Joplin were among the notable and new who decided to give it a chance, being paid from $3,000 - $15,000 each for their onforgettable performances.

As the list of performers' names grew, so too did the crowds. Friends of ours said they drove as far as Monticello, but the traffic tieups were so bad that they turned around and went home.

From Sea to Shining Sea they came - waves of excited music lovers, swelling beyond any conceivable numbers. For those few who bought tickets there was no special seating. Days before the first bar of music sailed out over the Catskills, the masses started to arrive.

The anticipated fencing was worthless. Thousands trampled over the downed wire and onto the grounds. There wasn't enough food and getting to a Porta-Potty became a half-day adventure. To make it worse, the weather took a nosedive. Along with the sea of people - almost 400,000 - came waves of rain and thunderstorms and lightning.

In spite of the horrendous conditions, the music ruled. The music rocked. The music rolled. And the constantly moving tides of people rocked and rolled along with it. One attendee said that the whole experience was amazing. Everyone looked out for their neighbor and gave what they could to make someone with less more comfortable.

Food was brought in by helicopter when roads were too blocked by travelers to get supplies through. Most of the musicians arrived by air too, stunned by the unexpected sea of faces waiting to greet their musical idols and listen as their songs and sounds were emotionally fused deeply into each man, woman and child present. Unanimously, in later interviews, they all admitted to being wholly absorbed by the outpouring of love and appreciation for the musical gifts they brought.

Not even the terrible weather could stop the performances. The Greatful Dead gave a phenomenal performance - without any power. Yet, even though they played at night, in the dark, their music was heard - and appreciated.

In the creation of this beautiful museum, many images and video were located - much of which has never been seen or heard until now. It was all documented and recorded.

Meandering through and around all the displays, sounds and video presentations, visitors are transported through the tumultuous decade that was the 60's. The styles, the music, the men and women who shaped the decade with such energy that the relevance is palpable even today.

Janis Joplin, in an interview on the Dick Cavett Show after Woodstock, explained her heart-wrenching style in the need to hear women speak out from their core and fing their true selves and voices - not a popular idea of the times, when we were still being encouraged to be seen and not heard.

And, Muhammad Ali - then known as Cassius Clay. Nowadays he's beloved by so many. A gentle man with a huge heart. In the 60s we thought him pompous and loud-mouthed. When he refused to accept the draft everyone was in shock and dumbfounded by his audacity. On Wednesday I read the words he spoke as to WHY he refused to fight. Take the time to do so. Please read his words. Everyone. His words were prophetic, and totally understandable. Let our government leaders read them today - aloud - and let the words sink in. Sadly, they still apply.

As for the Hippies and drugs. Take the time to listen to all who spoke out to make this wonderful experience - the MUSEUM at bethel Woods Center for the Arts - come alive. The Hippies taught us how to work as a team united. At Woodstock, people helped each other to get through bad trips - not by giving them medicine with long-lasting negative effects, but instead, they walked the affected through their demons and out the other side. In turn, those people, stronger emotionally, also helped others after. It was a poerful, healing time for many.

By the time you reach the final, 20-minute documentary, in a beautifully appointed theater, there is still one more doorway - a room in which you can record your own experiences of the time - for future visitors to continue to enhance their visit.

Still wrapped in the aura of all we had just taken part in, I left the building firmly entrenched in the 60s once again. Down the hill, in the ampitheater, musicians were rehearsing for this weekend's performance. In the early summer afternoon, the colors were fresh and vibrant and lush carpets of dense, soft grass covered the area where once, 39 years ago, 400,000 enthusiastic music fans came to see and hear the bands and solo artists who are today's music legends in their own right.

The MUSEUM at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is a must see, must feel experience.

I've only been creating layouts at Moo Two Designs for about a month and have been in thrall with all the beautiful layouts throughout the gallery. They are an exciting group to watch and learn from.

This afternoon I was thrilled to find that a tribute I created to my childrens' father was selected as 'Layout of the Day' on June 6. Thank you so much, Ladies. It's a pleasure to be part of your wonderful group.

Where did THAT come from?!

As I started the title for this blog - about two hours ago, a massive thunder and lightning storm came in out of nowhere and successfully knocked out our internet connection, so I heeded the warning and promptly closed down and unplugged all unnecessary connections so there wouldn't be a massive surge when the power came back on.

We have rental cabins here at jellystone Park in Woodridge, New York. Check out is at noon, but as long as they've signed out in the office, we let them enjoy the rounds until 2pm. With a weekend in the 90's, no one was eager to leave, and the pool was packed. This morning was way too hot, but all the Workampers clean the rentals in teams and we were thankfully done by 2:00pm. Hot and sweaty, I returned to my RV to enjoy the ac and to revise one of my slideshows, deciding to break them into different categories.

I had just updated and reposted it and got as far as a blog title for today - and WHAM! The title actually posted - with NO copy - when the power and internet shut down. Imagine my surprise when I logged back on and found just that - one title for the day! Even the autosave didn't have time to kick in!

The storm is now over, everyone got safely out of the pools and headed for their respective homes after an otherwise great weekend in our park, and now it's time for a quick shower as several of us are going out to eat this evening in Monticello.

I even had a chance to chat with my daughter, who just buried her 19-year-old cat, Casara and is thinking her last one, Psycho, who she adopted in college, 16 years ago, is also about ready to leave this world. It's hard on her as her cats have been her 'children'. So today's had as many emotional ups and downs as the weather.

It's Early Allergy Time

So much for having a day off - my nose is singing songs I've never heard of as I pop allergy pills, sniff nose drops and blow my nose non-stop with Puff's Vics' tissues. Today is a 'mizrable' day. Working on the computer isn't terribly constructive as even a 17' laptop screen is still sraining my eyes. I started out this morning by proofreading a friend's resumee online - when I really wanted to work on my latest images. Having to concede to trying to get some rest today goes against my instinct. My mind will continue to formulate thoughts and ideas while my body screams at me to rest awhile.

Fortunately I was able to see "Sex in the City" in Monticello, New York yesterday. For those of us 'SitY' fanatics, it was cleverly melded as a true extension of the series with all our favorite characters as well as two newbies adding fresh input. Everyone will fall in love with Carrie's new personal assistant, Louise from St Louis who has a penchant for designer handbags. The introduction cleverly leads to understand how the four best friends reached this point of their lives. I enjoyed it enormously - even with my allergies starting up.

And, on that nore - I'm off to the shower and - hopefully - a brief nap.

Scraplifting

Most diehard scrappers are moan in disbelief when I say I don't know the Scrapbook jargon that comes so easily to all of them. It's true - even though I've been creating frames, mats and different looks to my images for quite some time, I was unaware that there was an active digital scrapbook community.

In the May/June Calf Scramble at MooTwo Designs, we are asked to scraplift a layout. I opted to work with Gloria ValVerde's 'Sedona Scenery' (link shown here).

My images were mostly from a visit to New York's Finger Lakes region last year, focusing on Taughannock Falls - the tallest waterfall east of the Rockies and 60 feet taller than Canada's Horseshoe Falls. All credits are as follows:
